What To Expect
From A Fishing Guide

What to Expect on the Water with J & J Guide Service

There’s a rhythm to a good day of fishing. It starts early, with cool Ozark air brushing your face as you step into the boat. The morning light paints the White River in shades of silver and blue, and for a moment, the world slows down. This is what you came for. A little adventure, maybe some quiet, and if luck leans your way—a trophy trout on the line.

At J & J Guide Service, we don’t just put you in the boat and point you downstream. We guide you through the experience—from the first cast to the last bite of lunch. Whether you’re new to fishing or have a hundred days on the water under your belt, our goal is simple: make sure your day is smooth, safe, exciting, and unforgettable.

First Things First: Gear, Prep & Getting Comfortable

You don’t need to bring a thing but your fishing license (with a trout stamp), some sunscreen, and your sense of adventure. We provide rods, reels, leaders, tippet, and all the tackle you’ll need—including flies, lures, or live bait suited for the conditions. We’ll have everything ready when you arrive.

Bringing your own gear? That’s great too. Our boat has room for your rod, your cooler, and whatever else you’d like to have on hand. A 5- or 6-weight fly rod or your typical spinning rod will handle just about everything these rivers have to offer.

Once you’re settled in, Captain Jeff will give you a rundown of what to expect. Don’t worry if you’re new to all this—he’s known for being patient, helpful, and as easy to talk to as your favorite neighbor. And if you’ve got kids along, even better. Jeff loves getting young anglers their first fish, and we’ve got child-sized life vests on board just in case.

On the Water: Fishing the White and Norfork Rivers

Whether we’re floating the mighty White River or slipping into the cool, clear Norfork, the day is yours. Some stretches are best floated; others call for hopping out and wading into the current. We’ll do a mix, unless you prefer to stay dry in the boat—and that’s perfectly fine too.

These rivers are alive with fish. Rainbows dart through the runs, browns hold low in the pools, and if you’re lucky, you might find a cutthroat or brookie on the Norfork. We’ll switch techniques as needed—trolling, drifting, casting to rising fish. Captain Jeff’s job is to keep the lines in the water, the rods bending, and the fish stories growing by the minute.

Lunch is provided on 3/4 and full-day trips—usually something simple and satisfying to enjoy on the bank or in the boat while watching the river roll by. There’s always time to breathe, take in the view, and maybe watch an eagle sweep across the tree line.

A Trip Built Around You

Every trip with J & J Guide Service is a little different, and that’s the point. Some folks come looking for peace and quiet. Others want a full-on trophy hunt. And many just want to get outside with friends or family and catch a few fish in one of the most beautiful places in Arkansas.
We’ll tailor the trip to your pace, your goals, and your comfort. No pressure, no rush—just a good day on the water, guided by someone who knows these rivers like home.

After the Last Cast

As the day winds down and we reel in the final lines, you’ll probably feel it—that deep-down, sun-warmed tiredness that only comes from a full day outdoors. Maybe you’ll head back to Mountain View for dinner and a cold drink. Maybe you’ll start planning the next trip before you’ve even left the boat ramp.

What we can promise is that you’ll leave with more than just photos. You’ll have a story. A memory. And hopefully, a fish or two you’ll be bragging about for a long time.

That’s what to expect from a day with J & J Guide Service on the White and Norfork Rivers: good company, great fishing, and a true Ozark experience that sticks with you long after the last cast.
